I’m so sorry to read this Emily. It utterly sucks (actually, it’s beyond sucking) & I’m so sorry this has happened to you. I totally understand & empathise with your feelings on this. You are not alone. Your work is brilliant, but more importantly, you are x

'An honest friend?' I see nothing friendly in what you have just said. Emily worked for a PhD and earned the title of Dr. It is you who looks like the twat for failing to recognise the value of putting hard-earned qualifications on a CV.

And you have no right to criticize someone's online presence when you are here, online, saying things that are mean enough that you feel the need to hide behind a pseudonym.

I'll answer this in good faith, as if it was asked in good faith: of course employers carry out checks and that's fine. I've not said anything online that I am not happy for an employer to see. For me the trade off too, is that I have built my writing and freelance career using an online presence and I am not willing to compromise that work, that standing and those opportunties for any one job.

As for using my title, it is my title. I have a PhD which is visible on my CV, and illustrates to any employer a range of skills and experience I have. It is also something that is relevant to a lot of roles as it is...a qualification. So no I will continue to use my PhD under my list of qualifications.
